the 2nd paragraph of Mr Severn's despatch.

The door was, however, left open to the pos-

sibility of the continuance of temporary allow-

ances so far as they may be required, to bring

the pensions calculated on the new tables up to

the level of those calculated on the old tables

plus the 25% temporary allowance.

The tables at presentin use in Hong

Kong are identical with those until recently in

use in Malaya, Ceylon and certain of the West

Indian Colonies. The re-calculation of these

tables, on an 8% basis has already been carried

out by Mr T.E.Young and Sir G.H.Ryan, on behalf

of the Governments of Trinidad and Ceylon:

in the preparation of the new Tables

were paid in equal shares by the Govern-

ments of Trinidad and Ceylon on the under

standing that if they should be adopted

by other Colonies and Protectorates they

should be asked to share the cost. As

I have indicated these tables have now

been adopted by the Straits Settlements

and the Federated Malay States, so that

if you decide to adopt them, the Hong

Kong share of the expense incurred in

their preparation would be about £43.

This sum would not,of course, include

the cost of printing supplies of the

new Tables. In this connection I have

to state that the type set up for print-

ing the tables for the Government of

Ceylon has been broken up. It might

however, be possible for you to make

arrangements with the Straits Settlements

Government for the supply of such copies

28 you may require from their type.
